Backsplash

As a tile salesperson, this word "backsplash" can alternately conjure feelings of excitement, bewilderment, and (occasionally) loathing when uttered by the client seeking help for that seemingly insignificant space between the counter and the cabinet. Who knew 18 inches of space can evoke so much emotion? Perhaps I have a lot to do with this. Perhaps not.

Some people throw a beige tile at the space, ignoring potentially amazing options in favor of safety-- in favor of "resale value." With exception for those few times when beige tumbled marble really IS the best solution, this space is truly a place where some personality needs to come into play.

Day in, day out, we hear that the granite/marble counter is the focal point of the client's kitchen. I appreciate this, and encourage backsplash options to help enhance the investment. Even though I'm a tile salesperson, I can see how a granite/marble slab backsplash can create a breathtaking focal point. You can see your counter material from afar if this is done (instead of having to be right near the counter to see its beauty). If you are in fear that it may be too intense, consider having the slab strictly over the cooktop if you have a range hood. With this in mind let's discuss focal points.

Not every kitchen has a range hood. Sometimes folks opt for a microwave over their cooktop, which is fine. I've seen some kitchens with the microwave installed next to/near a set of double ovens so that they leave space above a cooktop for a focal point. That being said, if you have a microwave over your oven, I would consider an alternative to the framed out focal over a stove.
